by the
famed
GEORGE TRAUTMAN
of THE Ohio State University Buckeyes
and MiLB.
This letter is very significant for a host of reasons:
1)
Trautman
coached was in the OSU Athletic Dept and he was hand chosen by Lynn St. John to replace St. John himself as
OSU Varsity Basketball Coach. Trautman coached the team for 3-yrs.
2) He played
Varsity baseball in 1912-1914
and the field was named after him for nearly 30yrs and was elected to the OSU Hall of Fame for his stint on the team.
3) In the
upper left of the letterhead is the Athletic Department's staff for 1921 and I was surprised to see the iconic Chic Harley on staff,
the sole player who ushered THE Buckeyes into the pantheon of CFB blue bloods.
4) This letter is
written to Francis "Tee" Young, Captain of the 1924 OSU football team
. This letter is from Tee's personal estate. I don't have a letter from the family for this piece but I acquired two other pieces and have LOAs for those (happy to share those pix).

I have an incredible 7.5" x 19.5" large silver Type 1 gelatin panoramic of Tee, the famed photo that was used in the over-sized poster schedule. Imagine this pano framed alongside the infamous poster, it would be a museum worthy piece.

INTERESTING HISTORY on Trautman:
At Ohio State
-
As an undergraduate at OSU, Trautman was a three-sport letterwinner in football, basketball and baseball. After graduation, he became an assistant Athletic Director under Lynn St. John. As assistant athletic director, Trautman was instrumental in helping to establish the Ohio Relays.
Trautman was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978.
Trautman Field, named in honor of George Trautman, was the home field of the Ohio State baseball team from 1967 to 1996.
When St. John gave up his basketball coaching duties, he assigned them to Trautman. Trautman held the position of men's basketball head coach for three years. In those three years he had an overall record of 29-33.
Professional baseball -
In 1933 Trautman became president of the Columbus Red Birds, a MiLB team. Three years later, Trautman was named president of the American Assoc. the league in which the Red Birds played. He held that position from 1936 through 1945. Trautman moved the office of the league from Durham, NC to Columbus, OH. In 1946 Trautman was named GM of the Detroit Tigers, succeeding Jack Zeller. After two seasons with the Tigers, Trautman was appointed as the new President of the National Assoc. of Professional Baseball Leagues, succeeding William Bramham. Trautman held that position from 1947 until his death in 1963.
Under Trautman's leadership, a new relationship was forged between the Majors and the minor leagues. Territorial rights, which had been in dispute, were established so that if the major leagues took over a National Association city, compensation would be due to both the existing team and its league.
Each year, the Topps Company, in conjunction with MiLB, awards the
George M. Trautman Award
to the
Topps Player of the Year
in each of sixteen domestic minor leagues
